Study confirmed the effectiveness of external shading in preventing indoor overheating

Researchers at Loughborough University found that external screens reduce indoor temperatures in homes by up to 6°C. The results highlight the importance of passive overheating protection measures under climate change.

Researchers at Loughborough University found that the use of external shading can reduce indoor temperatures in residential homes by up to six degrees Celsius. The experiment involved two identical semi-detached houses: one was left unchanged, while the other was fitted with external screens, heat sensors, and simulators of heat gains from occupants. The aim of the work was to find affordable solutions to protect against overheating amid rising summer temperatures and reduced reliance on air conditioning.

During the tests, the shaded building consistently remained cooler:

  • 🌡️ on the day journalists visited, the temperature in the standard house exceeded 33 °C

  • while in the protected one it did not rise above 29 °C

The scientists noted that during heatwaves it is helpful to keep windows closed during the day to limit the intake of hot air. External blinds, overhangs, and canopies block solar heat before it reaches the glass, which is especially effective for rooms with large windows and glazed extensions.
