Six months ago, the world’s largest solar power plant installed on a stadium went into operation on the roof of Signal Iduna Park, the home ground of Borussia Dortmund. The project, delivered jointly with the club’s energy partner RWE, became a prominent symbol of professional football’s shift toward renewable energy sources while preserving the iconic appearance of the legendary arena.
The new installation fully replaced the previous system, which could no longer meet the club’s growing needs.
Since December 2025, the plant has been generating more than 4 GWh of clean electricity per year—enough to power the stadium lighting for roughly 1,000 matches. At the same time, it helps avoid emissions of around 1,700 tonnes of CO₂ per year, aligning with Borussia’s long-term sustainability strategy. 🌱

The energy core of the project consists of 11,132 bifacial n-type JA JAM54D41/LB modules rated up to 450 W each. Double glazing, higher efficiency, and reduced degradation enable reliable operation over 30 years, while the full-black design blends seamlessly with the club’s black-and-yellow color scheme. The technology was supplied by JA (formerly JA Solar), selected for its balance of high performance and aesthetic requirements.
